El infierno que nos confirmaron los militares canadienses

En los primeros días de la pandemia se hizo evidente que muchas de las muertes ocurrían en hogares de ancianos. Quebec fue el primero en solicitar formalmente la asistencia del ejército canadiense para abordar la emergencia. Diariamente, los reporteros de los medios de comunicación de esa provincia presionaron al Primer Ministro Trudeau cuando iba a enviar al personal militar. Las solicitudes fueron cumplidas y los militares entraron. Días después, el premier Doug Ford aquí en Ontario hizo la misma solicitud. Trudeau advirtió que esta no es una solución a largo plazo, sino temporal.

Ford llamó 'campeones' a los militares por solicitar valientemente ir a los sitios más afectados. Sin temor, el personal militar entró y, en algunos casos, fue infectado por el virus, pero valió la pena.

La Fuerza Especial Conjunta de la 4ta División Canadiense escribió un informe mordaz de 15 páginas sobre las condiciones deplorables y las acciones negligentes tomadas en hogares de cuidado a largo plazo para personas mayores. Casi el 80% de todas las muertes por coronavirus en Canadá provienen de estos hogares y uno se pregunta cuánto más baja podría haber sido esa estadística si se hubieran tomado medidas para cuidar a nuestros mayores en esos hogares. Es increíble saber que los residentes que dieron positivo al coronavirus se mezclaron en habitaciones con aquellos que fueron negativos, entre otros actos de negligencia grotesca. El ejército confirmó la infestación de insectos en algunos de los hogares y la alimentación agresiva que causa asfixia.

El primer ministro Trudeau siempre nos ha recordado en sus sesiones informativas diarias durante esta pandemia qué si algo nos pasa el gobierno 'tiene nuestra espalda' y se ha inyectado una inversión sin precedentes de miles de millones de dólares en programas de emergencia. Uno se pregunta si no estamos haciendo lo mismo con los hogares de ancianos. Al igual que Quebec, Ford vuelve a hablar fuerte y promete una investigación exhaustiva que puede conducir a cargos penales. Tal vez se requiera una revisión exhaustiva de la calidad del cuidado de nuestros mayores y una revisión de las operaciones existentes lo antes posible en vez de tanta indignación verbal Sr. Ford.

In the first few days of the pandemic it became evident that many of the deaths were happening at old age folks homes. Quebec was the first to formally request the assitance of the Canadian military to address the emergency. Daily, the reporters from media outlets from that province pressed Prime Minister Trudeau when was he going to send the military personnel over. The requests were honoured and the military went in. Days after, Premier Doug Ford here in Ontario made the same request. Trudeau warned that this is not a long term solution, but a temporary one. Premier Ford called the military 'champions' for valorously requesting to go to the most affected sites. Fearlessly the military personnel went in and in some cases were infected by the virus, but it was all worth it. The 4th Canadian Division Joint Task Force wrote a scathing 15-page report on the deplorable conditions and negligent actions taken at long term care homes for seniors. Nearly 80% of all deaths from coronavirus in Canada comes from these homes and one wonders how much lower that stat could have been if action could have been taken in caring for our elders in those homes. It is incredible to learn that positive covid residents were mixed in rooms with those who were negative amongst other grotesque acts of negligence. The prime minister has always reminded us on his daily briefings during this pandemic that the government 'has our backs' and an unprecedented investment of billions have been injected into emergency programs. One wonders if we are not doing the same with old age care homes. Similar to Quebec, Ford is talking tough again and promising an exahustive investigation that can lead to criminal charges. Perhaps a review of the care of our elders and an overhaul of the existing operations is required as soon as possible rather than tough talk Mr. Ford.
