This Friday Toronto will experience the coldest temperatures in years

Tomorrow Toronto will experience an intense drop in temperatures, which will cause wind chill to reach -30°C in the morning.

The Canadian weather agency issued an extreme cold warning for Toronto and much of southern Ontario ahead of tonight's arrival of a blast of cold Arctic air that will blanket the region.

Winds will also increase late today and into Friday morning when a polar vortex will make its presence felt in Toronto and much of the GTA.

Environment Canada said northwest wind gusts will hover around 30 km/h and peak at 50 km/h, leading to wind chill values of -30°C in some parts.

Friday will feature the worst cold in all of Ontario, the most frigid air the city has seen in many years.

Tomorrow's daytime high could hover around minus 12°. But at night the wind chill could reach -30°C and stay there until early Saturday morning, the Canadian weather agency said.

Overnight temperatures in the city will drop to -20°C in Toronto, with a chance of flurries. The city of Toronto says four warming centers will remain open.

Officials warned that frostbite can develop in a matter of minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill, and recommended bundling up especially well tomorrow.

The last time the city of Toronto saw temperatures this low was the morning of February 13, 2016 when it was 26° below zero at Pearson Airport.
