Canada is receiving the highest number of immigrants since 1972.

Statistics Canada reports that the country welcomed over 145,000 immigrants during the first three months of the year.

That is the highest number recorded for a single quarter since comparable data became available in 1972.

The federal agency released its quarterly population estimates today. Canada continues to experience rapid growth.

The population growth rate was also the fastest ever recorded for a first quarter, with 98% of the growth coming from immigration.

On June 16th, Canada's population reached 40 million, according to Statistics Canada's population clock.

The federal government launched new immigration targets in the fall that will see Canada receive 500,000 immigrants per year by 2025.
